Modern Day Tower of Babel

Our conversation’s changed from words, to blah, blah, blah…

- Relient K, “Maintain Consciousness”

Ever had the feeling that we’re living in a modern day version of the tower of Babel?

For those who don’t know, there’s a narrative in the Bible in the book of Genesis (the first book, no less), wherein men tried to prove their superiority over God by building a tower that reached the heavens - possibly to have dominion over everything. Because that isn’t allowed, the Lord had no choice but to ruin this plan by confusing the people, making them speak in different languages so that they wouldn’t be able to understand each other, and as such, effectively stop their plan.

Right now, though, I’m not talking about the difference of nationalities, races, even languages. I mean general understanding. How come a lot of people don’t see eye-to-eye anymore, even if they come from essentially the same backgrounds? It’s not that I want everyone to seem mind-controlled and only have one direction of thoughts - individuality is very important, after all. However, how come they can’t even agree to disagree? It’s not just confusing, but it makes things difficult as well.

Are we forging our way to self-destruction all over again? I hope not.
