MySpace bars 29,000 sex offenders

The social networking website MySpace has reported a four-fold increase in the number of convicted sex offenders using its service.
The company found more than 29,000 convicted sex offenders in the United States had profiles on MySpace - up from a figure of 7,000 given in May.

Opinion — People used to think the very idea that a major PC vendor would offer desktop Linux was beyond a joke. It was, as Vizzini from The Princess Bride would have said, “Inconceivable!”

WASHINGTON - A majority of the Federal Communications Commission expressed support Tuesday for a plan to impose open-access requirements on some of the valuable wireless airwaves due to be auctioned by the government later this year.
Three of the five FCC commissioners told lawmakers at a congressional hearing they were in favor of a proposal that requires whomever wins the bidding for part of the airwaves to make them accessible to any device or software application.

The news may overflow with stories about the social networking giants, such as Facebook and MySpace, but a horde of companies are doing their best to reduce the fundamental features of these websites to mere commodities. A new people-focused content site called WikiYou launches this morning out of beta. Generally speaking it is a “wikipedia for people” with a social network bolted on. The focus is is on biographies and stories about individuals. Much of the content is wiki-like, allowing anyone to edit it.
