Initial D: Street Stage

(PSP version)

Based on the popular manga by Shigeno Shuichi, Initial D has spawned it’s own anime series, a live action movie, as well as arcade and home version games. Since a lot of people love racing games, the arcade version called Initial D: Arcade Stage has hit the gaming world by storm. Addicted to being the greatest street racer, players would spend so much money just to keep on beating records in the game.

Luckily for those who don’t want to always spend for every single game, but still want to challenge other players there’s now an Initial D: Street Stage released for the PSP. There are various modes in the game: Story Mode, Time Attack, Bunta challenge and Wireless Mode.

In Story Mode (Legends of the Streets), players get to challenge street racers in their respective home courses featured in the manga and anime. Once you defeat them all, you’ll unlock the Bunta challenge and you will be able to race against him. Note that he’s a very difficult character to deal with and this challenge will test players’ racing skills. In Time Attack, this is where you can practice or defeat your own racing record. Lastly, in Wireless Mode, players can challenge other racers via ad hoc in arcade stage, time attack and sudden death.

Similar to the arcade version you get to tune your cars, but instead of using points, you use tune up cards. Every time you race, whether you win or lose, you get to pick a card. You can get an artwork card that usually unlocks loading screens and music or tune up card that can be used to modify your chosen car.

As expected with any Initial D title, the music is very upbeat. For the long time fans, they will immediately recognize songs like Speedy Speed Boy, Save Me and Dogfight. You’ll love the music especially if you are a Move or Super Eurobeat fan.

With regards to the language, even if you are not familiar with Japanese, the game is very easy to navigate through. The Asian version even comes with an English translated manual.

Overall, Initial D is an enjoyable game. But for those who have played other racing titles, you might find this title a little challenging. Since here, a little mistake will make you lose easily. Ryosuke Takahashi will even lecture you after Time Attack about the mistakes you made during your run.

So keep on practicing those racing moves and don’t forget to eat tofu everyday!
