Blogging Tools

Blogging tools are software that allows you to post into your blog without the need for logging in to them. These tools are specially useful when you manage multiple blogs like me (I have like more than 10 blogs) and don’t have the time to login on all of them at the same time.

Below are some tools that I recommend to use:

flock 1. Flock (for Windows/Linux/Mac) - The social browser. Flock is actually Mozilla Firefox under the hood, but its major differences is incorporating it with easy access tools such as logging in and managing Photobucket and Flickr. Its other major feature is the ability to access blog accounts online that enables the user to post without having to login to the actual account. Download Flock here. Want details on how to blog with Flock? Click on this link.

livewriter 2. Windows Live Writer (for Windows only) - Microsoft’s own entry and attempt to grab a share of the blogging market. It automatically integrates itself into Internet Explorer which is a nice feature. Originally intended for Windows Live Space users, they decided to make this available for many (if not all) blog accounts. Its a really good and full-featured blogging tool that I use but you have to install Microsoft’s proprietary “dotnet framework” files for it to work. You can download Windows Live Writer here and the necessary dotnet framework files here. You have to install the dotnet framework files first before you install Live Writer.

qumana 3. Qumana (for Windows/Mac) - A free blog editor thats based on simplicity and ease of use. It’s got the same full-featured functionality that Windows Live Writer has but its light on the system (I noticed that Windows Live Writer was hogging a bit of resources on the PC). Qumana is JAVA-based though and you may need to download the latest JAVA files for it to run. You can download Qumana here and if it requires you to download JAVA files for it to run, you can get the JAVA runtime environment here.

scribefire 4. Scribefire plugin for Firefox (for Windows/Linux/Mac) - For those of you who don’t want to install anything, consider using Scribefire, a simple plugin that allows you to post to your blogs within Firefox. Its got the basic features but only has limited support to some blogs. You can download Scribefire here.

I don’t have recommendations but try each and every tool out to see what suits you best.

ATLANTA, Georgia  — Federal health authorities said Tuesday that they are looking for people who may have been exposed to a rare and potentially lethal form of tuberculosis from an infected passenger during two trans-Atlantic flights this month.

The unidentified American male was found to be infected with a notoriously drug-resistant strain of tuberculosis called XDR TB.  He flew on May 12 from Atlanta to Paris aboard Air France Flight 385, then traveled on May 24 from Prague to Montreal aboard Czech Air Flight 410 before driving back to the United States. He is currently hospitalized in an isolation ward.

Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control, announced the matter personally.
While tuberculosis is not highly transmissible, the deadliness of this strain coupled and the ease of modern transportation, has highlighted the need for rapid response.

TB is usually spread by sneezing and coughing.  “During these two long flights, the patient may have been a source of infection to the passengers,” Gerberding told reporters.

According to her, the people most at risk would have been seated within two rows of the man.  She also added that she is not sure which seats the man occupied.  The C.D.C. is recommending that all passengers be notified.

“I don’t think we would compel people to be tested, but we would strongly recommend” that anyone seated near the man undergo a baseline test now and a follow-up test several weeks from now, she said.
Final diagnosis for XDR TB can take six to 16 weeks.

The first federal quarantine order in decades has been issued, and the C.D.C. is working with state and local health departments, airline officials, international health ministries and the World Health Organization.  Dr. Gerberding said “We felt it was our responsibility to err on the side of abundant caution and issue the isolation order.

XDR TB was recently defined as a subtype of multiple-drug resistant tuberculosis. According to Dr. Gerberding. the man’s tuberculosis had been diagnosed before his departure, but he disregarded his doctors’ recommendation that he not travel. “The patient had compelling reasons for traveling and made the decision to go ahead and meet those personal responsibilities,” she said.  She also added that federal authorities did not know until he had left the country that he had the rare form of the disease. According to her, the man himself may not have known either

Once he returned, the man was ordered into isolation, “and is required to stay in isolation until the responsible public health officials deem that he is no longer infectious to others,” she said.

Tuberculosis had been a leading cause of death even in the developed world until the development of streptomycin in the 1940s. Today, treatment by anti-tuberculosis drugs like isoniazid and rifampicin can cure up to 95 percent of patients.

But even those first-line drugs do little against multiple-drug resistant TB or MDR TB.  The specific strain found in the infected American, called XDR TB resists treatment even by three of the six second line drugs used when first-line drugs fail.  Only two cases of the strain were found last year in the United States.

For years, antibiotics have helped lower tuberculosis rates.  There was however some resurgence starting in 1985 from recent immigrants and HIV carriers.  Even then, TB cases are at an all-time low last year in the United States.  According to The Associated Press, there were only 13,767 were reported cases last year.

TB is still deadly specially in countries that lack medical care, killing around 1.6 million around the world every year.  It is particularly deadly among those infected with HIV. In one outbreak in South Africa, Dr. Gerberding testified, 41 percent of the 544 patients infected with tuberculosis were found to have multiple-drug resistant strains; of those, 53 met the definition of XDR TB

Of the latter group, all but one person died, on average just 16 days after health workers had tested them.

Having Sony’s Playstation 3 overrun by Microsoft’s XBox 360, Nintendo’s Wii and its very own Playstation2; is the PS3 really doomed?

Sony has released a new firmware for the PS3 that will feature upscaling of PS1 and PS2 games, and DVD movies up to full 1080p HD resolution.

The new firmware also enables Remote Play on their PSP across the internet, allowing them to access their PS3 anywhere in the world where a broadband internet connection is available.

Other features: Copying Saved Data to a Memory Card Users can now copy saved data from PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format software stored on their PS3 system to a Memory Card or Memory Card (8MB) (for PlayStation2), using their PS3 system and a Memory Card Adaptor. Photo Printing, Viewing, and Editing The photo capabilities of PS3 system have been enhanced, allowing users to print digital photos stored on a PS3s hard drive or inserted storage media. Currently, select Epson printers connected via USB are compatible. Users will find a new type of slideshow for displaying photos, zoom functionality and the option to crop images.

Version 1.80 also allows users on a home network to seamlessly view and play rich media content such as images, music and video on their PS3, that is stored on their DLNA enabled devices such as PCs and laptops elsewhere in the house, reinforcing PS3’s credentials as a home entertainment hub that truly deserves pride of place in the Living Room.

princess diana

LONDON - A British television channel has sparked an angry reaction by deciding to screen graphic images of the car crash which killed Princess Diana next week, the Observer newspaper reported Sunday.

Channel 4 is to show photographs that include Diana receiving oxygen from a doctor and a passing student trying to help her bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, who was seriously injured in the 1997 Paris smash, the paper said.

The programme, ‘Diana: The Witnesses In The Tunnel,’ also features interviews with photographers and people who saw the crash and is being screened on June 6.

‘I’m profoundly shocked,’ Patrick Jephson, Diana’s former private secretary, told the newspaper.

‘I don’t know what they think they will achieve by it. I’m very unhappy they find it necessary to show this sort of detail.’

Anthony Holden, the princess’s biographer and friend, added: ‘It’s grossly intrusive and beyond the bounds of anything remotely tasteful, and will no doubt upset her sons enormously.’

The royal household declined to comment on the programme, the Observer said, while a Channel 4 spokesman said it did not think the pictures were intrusive and that the show was serving ‘a genuine public interest.’

Channel 4 was last week ordered to screen a series of on-air apologies over its handling of a racist bullying row involving Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty on ‘Celebrity Big Brother,’ a reality television show, earlier this year.

The long-delayed inquest into Princess Diana’s death is expected to open in London later this year.
